Great turnout for our first ever Sunday event.
Round 6 of the 2005 Super Lap Series was another great opportunity for lapping at maximum speed for the 34 drivers who showed up this past Sunday. Perfect weather made for yet another gorgeous day at the Hawaii Motorsports Center short course. Highlights of the day included another victim of the guardrail exiting the chicane, our first blown motor (by this I mean a motor explosion, not a motor with a blower), the division of the limited rear wheel category into groups "A" & "B", my Winston West Monte Carlo, Tom Bryant's "budget racing" FD, a 300 horsepower civic, a Bob Bondurant Ford Mustang, our second formula entry, improved performance for many competitors and yet another revision to the Time Battle format.

New scoring system implemented
Although the day went smoothly once it started, organizers were a bit slow to get going in the morning due to a continual effort to establish an improved timing and scoring system. The gate moved smoothly, opening just after the scheduled 7:30 am time, but lacking the master list of drivers caused late numbering of the cars and the track didn't go green until nearly 9:30. This is something that we will continue to work on and we appreciate everyone's patience during this period of change. The flip side to this is the automatic program, which now makes for a nearly foolproof system if the correct data is entered. Super Lap Series organizers are proud of the job that Webmaster, Mike Kitchens, has done with this as it has made our job a whole lot easier and made possible the nearly instant reporting of results. There were two major incidents that slowed down the day, but other than that it went so smoothly that we were actually able to take our first true lunch break and with nobody chasing us out of there at the end of the day we were able to provide some "fun run" time before finally closing up at around 3:30 pm
.Division of the limited rear wheel drive class
Due to the competitiveness of the limited rear wheel drive class and the continual large turnout by them, along with encouragement from class competitors and a true need for a new rule the class will be divided into two groups henceforth. Drivers were provided with the paperwork describing the new rule implementation as they entered the gate and then it was reviewed during the driver's meeting. Essentially, a limited rear wheel drive group "B competitor is any limited rear wheel drive car with a displacement of 2.5 liters and below. Factory power adders are allowed, however, any modification to the power adder or an engine swap from the original motor to a motor from a different car adds 1.5 liters to the original size thus bumping that competitor into group "A". The rule is intended to create a class for smaller, less powered cars and allow for rewards to be given to these car & driver combinations.

Time Battle Format version 003
Drivers were subjected to yet another attempt by organizers to improve the excitement level events. Time Battle was morphed from its previous format into something slightly more competitive for round 6. The new system worked flawlessly up until the last grouping, which ended up pairing the two most diverse driver/vehicle combinations of the day. The intent of the new format was to pair up a faster car with a slower car by creating a group "1" and "2" line at the start. The slower group "2" car was to follow immediately by the faster group "1" car and it worked to perfection for everyone except yours truly. (I left after the group "2" car because I had not come fully to the starting line and he left before me because he knew no better). I intentionally went slowly at first and left what I thought was sufficient room to get in one fast lap, but miss-judged it by about 4 or 5 seconds catching the group "2" car at the entry to the sweeper. Of course I'm happy to be the shining example of how to screw up a good thing, but this should be a lesson by which you all might learn something and avoid this happening to yourselves.

Tom Bryant wins new limited rear wheel drive group "B" class
There were two drivers who really had a chance at winning for the first time in the newly developed class, Tom Bryant in his "budget racing" Mazda FD and Mathias Busch in his Lotus Elise. Unfortunately, Mathias took himself and his car out of competition in group 1 (sub 42 second) practice lapping by loosing the back of the car in the chicane, tank slapping on the exit and finally backing the little fiberglass bodied car into the infamous "exit chicane" guardrail. Mathias had worked himself into the 40-second range and was the only real threat to Tom. Tom won the class, however, may have hurt the motor in his "budget racing" (article forthcoming on this subject) RX-7 and we'll have to see if he's ready by the next event, scheduled for September 24th. Next closest contender for this category was Cory Tomoyasu who managed a 41.52 despite two spins out of his three Time Battle laps.

Mike Turolla manages to win L/RWD group "A" on an oily track
The tension built about 2/3 of the way through Time Battle competition after Roy Cabibo (1UF) grenaded his motor exiting the off-camber and oiled down the racing line all the way up to the sweeper entry. Fortunately and smartly Roy drove the car "off-line" through the sweeper and thus the most treacherous corner of the course remained fairly clean. Roy apologized for the mess and delay and explained that the destruction had left a fist-sized hole in the block, but that he wasn't too concerned since he had a few spares at home. Organizers were a bit slow to respond to the oil down, but did a tremendous clean up job. Mike was the next in line following Roy and not wanting to be a sacrificial guinea pig opted to run off-line during his Time Battle run in order to minimize any chance of slipping on the speedy dry that had been placed down to soak up the oil. Subsequent competitors all ran the normal line and there were no complaints about poor traction in the area.
Recent SCCA spectator race closed wheel group winner, Egmar Klemmer, piloted his Porsche 911 to second with a respectable 40.15, but the intense rivalry between rookies; Mike Ward and Terry Nelson is where the attention is focused still. Terry Nelson, getting ever more serious about his competitiveness, squeezed out a 41.42 over Mikes 41.53 to earn him an additional point in the season standings and keeping him in 3rd. We think the new supercharger may have been exactly what the M3 auto doctor ordered and may have made the difference this past event. Whatever the case, this is a great season battle to keep up with and both competitors have shown consistency and strength up until this point. Ron Swenson drove his Corvette to a strong 41.63, with Chris Billete turning his personal best (42.52) to take 6th and rookie, Mike McCabe, knocked 4 seconds off his best time even though suffering with a fading brake pedal.

The emergence of the new L/RWD group "B"
All of the eligible group "B" drivers for the limited rear wheel drive class have been given what is basically the start to a new season. No points were allowed to be carried over from events where scored previously so it was a golden opportunity to start anew. The most negatively affected competitor was Cory Tomoyasu who had accrued 5 points so far in 2005. Also loosing points was Mathias Busch who lost 1 (of course I'm pretty sure he's not thinking about points right now). Big gainers were the likes of organizer, Tom Bryant, who won the class and scored ten points in his RX7. Tom managed a 40.43 in Time Battle and tried all day to get into the 39's (something he claimed he was capable of) but his best time of the day was a 40.05 in practice. Cory scored strongly with a 41.52 and the "fireman", Elliot Loo, delighted onlookers with his flaming brakes while pumping out a somewhat slower than usual time of 44.30. New driver/car combinations to the class were Prasong Sangiamuongs in a Miata after starting motor sports as a Corolla drifter and Chad Miyashiro in his Honda S2000.

Limited front wheel drive class gets new competitors
Everyone was excited to see the continual emergence of new cars into the limited front wheel drive class even though the series most seasoned LFWD driver, Sy Kodama, teeters on the edge of retirement and chose not to compete in round 6. You couldn't miss the sound of Edgar Madrid's Honda Civic as he opened it up on the straight sections. He'd spin the tires every time he got turbo boost, including 3rd gear as he shot down the straight away. But the hard lessons of road racing were made apparent to him through brake and tire issues that confronted him all day and he was never able to put together a solid lap without experiencing some type of related problem during either practice or Time Battle. Edgar vows to return with better brakes and hopefully better tires for future Super Lap Series events. Upgraded brakes will be good for at least three or four seconds, but it may not be for a few rounds before we see the true potential of this car.
At the end of the day it was Reid Morimoto in 15F taking the win with the ever consistent, Barry Raff just .7 seconds back in second place. Running 3rd at a slightly slower than usual pace was Marc Pacpaco with all remaining competitors two seconds back from him.
A newcomer to the LFWD class this round was Becca Debo, daughter of SCCA driver Carl, she learned track etiquette, the line and a whole lot about car control with Dad next to her, coaching her along throughout morning practice. Becca is the third female to participate in our events and is just on the verge of getting into competition. She practiced in the family Mini on Sunday, but you can be sure that it won't be long before she's out in one of Dad's two racecars and, no doubt, breaking his records shortly thereafter.

Slight resurgence in all wheel drive class
Patrick Olsen set an impressive time to annihilate the competition in round 6 and has moved into second place in the points. Although not turning his personal best time, Patrick turned a 41.22 which was over 4 seconds faster than closest competitor Kalani Thompson in his Mitsubishi Eclipse. Kalani came to round 6 with new front brakes and spent most of practice searching for new breaking and turn-in points. Although he didn't improve on his best time his second place finish has now lifted him into 4th place in the points standings. We were pretty excited to see Stacy Ota "WRXGRL" return to the track and even more so after she knocked over two seconds off her previous best lap and moved into 7th place in the season standings by taking 4th place for the day. Newcomer, Brian McCarthy had a good first outing in his blue WRX wagon and scored 4 points for 3rd fastest limited all wheel drive time of the day with a lap of 46.37.

Unlimited rear wheel drive class continues to grow
For the second time in the history of the Super Lap Series a formula car (open wheel) competed in Time Battle competition. Steve Eggar brought out his nicely prepared, black Formula Ford to race, but there was no competition. Organizers quickly convinced him to run the car in the unlimited rear wheel drive class and he's probably glad he did. Steve won the class with an impressive 39.40 that was over two seconds quicker than his closest competitor; newcomer and apprentice at the racing school, Mitch Precht. Mitch did an outstanding job considering his rookie status and the misbehaving brakes of the Race Events Hawaii GT3 Mazda RX7. Mitch's best time in Time Battle was a 41.60 and this was only .6 seconds slower than his fastest lap ever. Another exciting appearance for everyone was Osamu Manabe in his recently acquired Bob Bondurant Racing School's Ford Mustang. Osamu adapted quickly to the feel of the car and was running consistent mid 42's for most of the morning, eventually bettering his Time Battle run to a 42.05 and securing 3rd place. As I said earlier (excuses, excuses) I ran afoul of the new Time Battle format when released after the group "B" car and although pacing myself (even to the point of stopping and re-centering my steering wheel) I caught him on the final lap approaching the sweeper. I hope I never make that mistake again.

UFWD drivers make full use of a loop hole in rules
In an opportunity to take advantage of a loophole in the rules and jump start the campaign of his upcoming unlimited front wheel drive car, Lincoln Loo registered and drove Reid Morimoto's Integra as a backup car. The rules allow for this and organizers are already working on changes to the backup car rule to provide a fair situation to all drivers. We think it's a bit uncommon for any type of organization to allow a backup car to be used for a car not yet registered, but have had no rule against this. Henceforth, we feel that a backup car may be used for a single event as a replacement for the primary car as long as the cars are of the same or lower class and the request is made at the time of registration. Lincoln's time of 41.56 was the fastest of the unlimited front wheel drive cars and he was awarded ten points. In second place, Roy Cabibo turned a 43.66 and this was on his second warm up lap since Roy's motor expired exiting the off camber and he never did make it to the finish line to take the checkered flag. Third place went to Martin Lau, who in his first ever attempt turned a decent lap of 46.74 and we're sure there's better laps to come from him. In the overall points, Roy Cabibo now leads with 22, as Marcus Ho had problems in practice and was unable to compete. Lincoln has slotted into 3rd place, tied with Sy Kodama both with ten points and just ten more back from Marcus who has 20.

Thanks again to all who helped
We hope that all of the volunteers enjoyed themselves on this truly wonderful day, as there was lots of action to keep them company. We know that there is some stress sometimes generated by us as organizers at difficult moments, but we are your friends above all else and you should know that we appreciate all that you do on a continual basis. We encourage you to participate at our events so that you too can experience the same joy all the drivers do and continue to gain perspective on the competitiveness of our events. I look forward to seeing you all at Round 7 on September 24th.Aloha!
