Good turnout for the season finale
Thirty five eager competitors lined up for the season's final event and to be present in the award of the Championship positions for the final three categories of the six divisions that make up the 2006 Super Lap Series. The Track went live just after the scheduled 9:00 am opening with Group "A" drivers hitting the track first. Four newcomers were quickly coached on the sidelines and then sent off to the bleachers to see how correct Super Lap protocol is supposed to be exercised. Meanwhile, the remaining Group "B" entries fiddled with and adjusted on their rides and prepared for the first of their two 40-minute practices scheduled for the morning. Three Formula Fords had entered the gates early and a fourth eventually showed so that the "race quota" was reached for their practice sessions which are mixed in to the schedule prior to the lunch break. The "Pizza Man" returned with his delicious lunch menu (of which I managed to gobble down my portion in the five minutes between doing things) and I think everyone is beginning to appreciate the value he brings to all of our events

.
Limited Front Wheel Drive crown is recaptured by Barry Raff
Barry Raff finished the season out nicely with a second place (Limited Front Wheel Drive) finish for the final round and has now repeated as Super Lap Champion. Barry's consistent season combined with Reid Morimoto's absence in the second half of the season turned around what otherwise might have been a whitewash (Reid still managed 2nd place for the season). Often exciting to watch, recent newcomer Robert Igarashi, stole the glory for the class with a 40.51 and the event victory, but it wasn't without a two close incidences (spins) in both the Sweeper and the Chicane. Licoln Loo, who eventually managed to secure 3rd place in the season points even though loosing his primary car in a roll-over in round 4, was back in fine form with solid practice sessions and he managed to round out the top three with a solid 41.25. There were also some other impressive performances including both Dirk Minami and Kevin Flanders who finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Limited Rear Wheel Drive Group "A's" Mike Ward takes final round
Mike Ward's presence was embellished with "Sonic" sponsorship for the event and he didn't let them down when it came to Time Battle. Ward snuck past Mike Turolla by 0.12 seconds with a 39.26 in competition. Turolla was slightly off the pace after neglecting to torque down a rear wheel before competition, but realizing the error he still committed himself to the run, coming up just a little short. Just slightly back in third place was the re-energized BMW M3 of Terry Nelson who overcame a blown radiator hose in practice to record a 40.00 flat. In fourth position was Tom Bryant in the FD; which slowed to a 40.14 due to worn tires and fading brakes and finishing off the LRWD top five a "rather wild" Chris Billete who managed to keep the car off the guardrails after three close calls in morning practice. Although congratulations have already gone out to the SLS 2005 LRWD Champion, Mike Turolla, special mention has to be made to both 2nd and 3rd place finishers; Mike Ward and Egmar Klemmer as well as Terry Nelson and Tom Bryant. These four are all a threat to the upcoming 2006 season. In the final standings behind Mike Turolla were Mike Ward (2nd), Egmar Klemmer (3rd), Terry Nelson (4th) and Tom Bryant who managed 5th even though only competing in three LRWD Group "A" competitions.

Matthias Busch snags Limited Rear Wheel Drive Group "B" win
Although Corey has secured himself the season's LRWD Group "B" title it didn't stop him from going after yet another event victory in his Mazda Miata. Unfortunately for him, he came up just a little bit short against the Lotus Elise of Matthias Busch and indicated that he'd suffered a few bumps and bruises along the way. Matthias scooted his little Elise around the short course in speedy fashion to a personal best Time Battle finish of 41.12. Even with the maximum ten points earned he was unable to move himself up from 4th in the final points standings. Finishing in 3rd for the day and just a scant 0.08 seconds back was the bright yellow Lotus Elise driven impressively by Earl Ford who posted his 41.62 in his first ever Time Battle competition. Elliot Loo saved his best performance for the last event of the season, finally breaking into the 42-second bracket in the "quick brick" and securing 3rd in the season standings, just one point back from Tom Bryant. An equally impressive time was posted by relative newcomer Graham Henderson who also solidly entered the "bracket" with a 42.91 in his Nissan Silvia. His 5th place finish earned him one point and moved him up to 5th place in the final standings ahead of Ken Peters and Chad Miyashiro with whom he had previously been tied.

2005 Limited All Wheel Drive Championship awarded to Kalani Thompson
Round 10 provided the final decision everyone had been waiting for in the Limited All Wheel Drive category and the performances of the top finishers were worthy of their final standings in the Season Championship. Kalani Thompson closed out the season with an exclamation point on the title by managing a 42.75 second lap. This was the first event that Kalani has ever dipped into the 42's and to get it all right for the tricky Time Battle competition was quite an achievement. Stacy Ota, second place for the day and the Championship, also put in a valiant effort and beat her previous best time by over a second, improving to a 44.42. The 2005 season's early class leader, Egmar Klemmer, attempted to earn points by running a back-up car, but organizers disallowed it due to a technicality and he was thus relegated to 3rd in the final standings. Gratefully, in the second half of the season, Stacy and Kalani provided what the class was sorely lacking; participation and action, but the dissolution of the class was a disappointment to organizers after what had seemed such a promising start in the 2004 season.

Unlimited Front Wheel Drive Champion, Marcus Ho, makes it 5 for 5
Marcus Ho had already been crowned as the Season Champion but, nevertheless, he took the opportunity to test and tune the little green Honda Civic for all it was worth this time out. All the bugs seem to have been sorted out and after fully coming to terms with the car Marcus pulled out a 40.96 for his Time Battle run and was able to post his fifth win for the season. There were no competitors willing to burn up a set of tires and brakes for second place in round 10 so the season somewhat dissolved into the final positions with Sy Kodama and Roy Cabibo rounding out 2nd and 3rd for the points positions. Although Lincoln Loo and Martin Lau had each taken a stab at the ULFWD title neither of them was able to make a dent in the top three position points and they finished the season in 4th and 5th places respectively.

Unlimited Rear Wheel Drive crown recaptured by Egmar Klemmer
Egmar Klemmer rounds out the season with what was arguably the best performance of the year: A 36.97 second lap! After complaining regularly about the difficulty of warming up the 240Z in the few laps provided in Time Battle the German turned on the afterburners and scorched the year's best time by over a second on his way to capturing the Round 10 event and the season title. A noble effort was made by Osamu Manabe in his Bondurant Ford Cobra when he squeezed out a 39.34 second lap, but there was no way of catching Egmar on this day. The two competitors finished out the season with Egmar taking the title and Osamu finishing an impressive second while third place, Messer, sat out the final event with a hurt motor. There had been seven other entries in the Unlimited Rear Wheel Drive category throughout the year, but none amassed more that 10 points due limited participation and thus were no threat to the crown in 2005.

Season winds up at the Awards Banquet January 7th
The season closed out in a somewhat predictable fashion, but we were excited to see a good turnout just a week before Christmas and have been regularly impressed by the devoted competitors who managed to nibble away at their own personal best times as well as category records throughout the season. We know there will be some serious competition in 2006 and major rule changes are being considered to elevate the competitiveness of the sport and provide incentive and balance to the structure which already exists. The 2006 Champions will be recognized, along with a few special awards to be presented for other outstanding achievements throughout the season, at the 2005 Super Lap Series Awards Banquet. The banquet will be held at Round Table Pizza in Waikiki on Saturday, January 7th at 7:00 pm. This special event will be a great opportunity to gather together for some good food, fun and drinks while we sit back and watch a video presentation by Mike Kitchens and the awards are handed out to the notable guests. We hope you will all join us in this celebration. See you there!
Aloha!
