SUPER LAP SERIES ROUND 3

DRIVERS GET CHANGES TO TIME BATTLE FORMAT

In an effort to improve the quality, safety and fairness of the Super Lap Series to all drivers, organizers decided to alter the structure of the Round 3 event and the DriftSession staff now caution all participants that more changes are yet come. Changes were inevitable in light of the natural development of the new series, and the approach to this performance "street car" competition has always been to adapt when there is sufficient cause. Our goal has always been, first off, to provide drivers with a safe and affordable environment so that a driver teamed with his or her preference of vehicle may explore the potential of each. Improvement of a driver's personal best lap time is usually the primary goal, but there are many other achievements to be made along the way. Because car types can vary so much we settled for six basic competition classes; front, rear and all wheel drive in both limited and unlimited classification. Except for the unlimited all wheel drive class there has been participation in all divisions and the unlimited front wheel drive is showing some promising development.

DRIVERS TO REVIEW THEIR INFORMATION AND UPDATE ROSTER

I think everyone was grateful that only 35 cars showed up for this past event and that the pains of the registration from the previous event were more or less behind us. Except for a few glitches, the new timing system seems to be working out nicely and as long as drivers remember to show their lap times to the recording official there should be little error. Time Battle was run in a new format that provided one warm up and two solo laps for each competitor, but interestingly, the winning results remained essentially unchanged from round 2.

There have been a few recording errors over the course of time and we acknowledge that the human factor can never be ignored. We depend on the honor system so, in the event that we make a mistake, just take the time to go to the guest book on this website and make an appeal for anything from rule changes to corrections to timing and scoring. It would make issues related to our series a whole lot easier for us to track rather than going back and forth to the Forums Hawaii site. More than anything, we hate spelling your names wrong or getting your car color or number mixed up and small unnecessary mistakes.

SERIOUS SHIFT IN CLASS PARTICIPATION AWAY FROM AWD

Super Lap Series organizers are surprised by the shift and direction change that has been experienced since the conception of the event. Whereas at the first event nearly half the field was comprised of limited all wheel drive cars, the field has recently dwindled down to only two cars, at least for this past event. On the other hand we are pretty happy with the appearance of the first Mitsubishi Evo. Jerome Ramos piloted car 25A to a class winning finish with a 43.37 lap while earning 10 points towards the championship (putting him in 2nd place) in his first attempt in the Time Battle competition, proving that even a rookie has a chance if the top guns don't show up. (Of course, we're sure that Egmar Klemmer, pilot of cars 9A, 2R and 1RU, is keeping a close eye on all of his points rivals while contending to win in three categories this year).

In second place in the limited all wheel drive category was car 14A driven by Kalani Thompson who ran a personal best lap of 44.97 with 3rd thru 6th place points going un-awarded due to the small class turnout. All of this enabled Kalani to move into what is nearly a three way tie for 3rd place in the points with no-shows (unable to attend?) of Patrick Olsen who drives car 8A and Nathan Keirn, 11A.

LIMITED REAR WHEEL DRIVE WINNER REPEATS FOR 3 OUT OF 3

Even though organizers have completely revamped the format of the Time Battle competition, Mike Turolla was true to form winning the limited rear wheel drive class for the third straight time in car 77R. Mike turned a personal as well as class fastest time of 38.54 and the win secures him even further in his bid for the championship with 30 points. Rumors have it that this event may have been a bit more costly for him and he was seen working on the brake ducting for quite a while during gaps between morning practices. Although possibly suffering some brake damage he still managed to win in an impressive fashion.

In second place driving 2R, Egmar Klemmer, ran quickly in his Porsche 911 to a 39.58 and has just barely secured second place in the points, even though he had to do so on some rather old tires. Third place belonged to "rookie" Mike Ward, 55R, who is a transplant from karting and shocked everyone at the last event by running in the 41 second bracket. Well, Mike backed it all up by running a 41.27 in round 3, just over a tenth of a second slower than his previous personal best, posted in his first ever event, in round 2.

Third place in the points has been nicely managed by "rookie" Terry Nelson who consistently runs in the mid to low 42's and is now introducing his daughter to the sport. Terry experimented with tire pressures and checked temperatures all morning long in a search for the exact setup and was unable to better his personal best but it was good enough for 5th place and earned him two valuable points to secure 3rd place in the current season standings. Not to go un-noticed had to be the performance of Ron Swenson, driver of the 9R Corvette. Ron Beat his previous time by almost a second and a half, running a 41.82 and taking fourth in class for the event.

LIMITED FRONT WHEEL DRIVE BATTLE TIGHTENS UP

Reid Morimoto returned in his yellow Integra, car 15F, for round 3 and improved on his previous fastest lap to post a fast lap of 40.36 and win his class, but it wasn't without a battle from 2004 Champion, Barry Raff, 1F. Barry beat his previous personal best time also, but by a bit more, turning a 41.31 and closed the gap between his Mini and the fastest limited front wheel drive car by .95 seconds. Could he be trying to chip away at the stronghold of the front-runner? The finishing order secures and extends Reid's first place in the current season standings with 20 points and puts Barry up into second with 13.

Third place in limited front wheel drive was taken by 3F driven by Mark Pacpaco (who consistently hovers in the 42 second range) and if you check the current season standings you will find him in a tight, three way battle for third thru fifth place. Mark is currently in 5th, but is separated only by the faster times of contenders Reid Morimoto and Lincoln Loo who are both scoring points in car 9F.

UNLIMITED FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CLASS GETS A NEW CONTENDER

Roy Cabibo, 1UF, has a rival for the 2005 crown in the unlimited front wheel drive class in the form of veteran and 2004 limited rear wheel drive Champion, Marcus Ho. We're pretty excited to see this, of course, as it was the original goal of the Super Lap Series to spotlight the import cars and tap into the frenzy and curiosity of the market. Roy was unable to improve on his round 2 results and Marcus drove car #2UF to a Time Battle fast lap of 42.60 and edges out Roy for 1st place due to a faster overall time.

EGMAR LOOKS UNSTOPPABLE IN UNLIMITED REAR WHEEL DRIVE

Egmar Klemmer ran the 1UR Datsun 240 to a victory in his class with none of the usual unlimited rear wheel drive cars competing at round 3. He scored ten points and extends his lead in class with no other competitors yet earning points. Newcomer to the series, 6UR Carl Debo competed in his spec RX-7 and, while sorting out some of the finer points of his brake system, is a bit down on power for the class at the moment. Carl is a long time racer who uses the Super Lap Series to test equipment as well as his own abilities during breaks between SCCA Regional races.

Most of the unlimited cars struggled a bit with the new format due to the restricted number of warm up laps prior to green hot laps, and complaints of cold tires and cold brakes were heard from drivers of all types of cars. The organizers are considering additional changes to minimize the negative effects of the new format.

DRIFT SESSION STAFF TAKES TO THE TRACK, MORE WORKERS ARE WELCOME

Again, a variety of cars are turning up to Super Lap events and we are excited to see some of our own staff take a stab at turning their own fastest lap. Many of you know Tom Bryant who drove the formula Hawaii car 2UR to the current track record 35.03 in 2004. Last year Tom also used his skills to sort out Kel Komatsubara's hybrid RX-7 #5UR and my Z-28 4UR. This past event saw staff regulars 2F Sy Kodama, 5F Michael Niinu and 57R Chris Billete all take turns at the short course even though they were busy all day running the event. We cannot tell you how much we appreciate their help, it's the least we can do to give them a little track time and it has been somewhat understood that people who regularly work events get opportunities to run for free sometimes.

We encourage all participants and spectators interested in learning more and helping staff Super Lap and DriftSession events to contact us and volunteer. We can always use the help and there are a few perks along the way. Thanks again to everyone who attended and especially our staff who are in the middle of working 4 out of 5 weekends in a row helping to run DriftSession events. We look forward to seeing all of you at Round 4 this coming Saturday, May 7th.

Aloha!
